In 1964, the Robertson County Board of Education decided to construct Westside Elementary School. The school was needed as a replacement facility for the Main Street School located in downtown Springfield. The school housed sixth, seventh, and eighth grade students initially. In 1971, the grades changed to fifth, sixth, and seventh and again in the mid-1980's to kindergarten, fifth, and sixth grades. Presently, Westside houses grades first through fifth.
Westside Elementary School is located on 12.47 acres purchased from Billy Pitt in 1964 for $35,000. The cost of the facility was $424,000. This site was thought to be the most economical site at the time.
In the summer of 1997, a new addition was started at Westside as part of the Robertson County's five year improvement plan. The addition includes a new media center, audio/visual storage area, principal's office, conference room, and 10 new classrooms. The cost of the new addition was 1.2 million dollars designed to accommodate the recent 2% city growth.
In Robertson County's five year improvement plan, Westside Elementary School was targeted to house students in grades kindergarten through fifth grade by fall of 1999. To date, Bransford Elementary School houses all of the Springfield area kindergarten classes, while Westside Elementary School continues to house first-fifth grades zoned accordingly. (Westside is dedicated to providing a quality education for all students.)
Westside Elementary School has 32 classrooms. Twenty-one of those are regular classrooms. The others consist of two resource rooms-one that is shared with Title I, an Extended/CDC Resource Room, Behavior Classroom, Mobile Technology Reading Intervention Room/In-School Suspension, Technology Intervention Lab, Speech Room, ELL Room, Library/Media Room, Gymnasium, and Music/Guidance Room. Additionally, Westside has a Nurse's Office/Basic Room, Guided Reading Book Room, a Guidance Office, and Conference Room. The administrative area includes a Principal's Office, School Office, Copy Room/Teacher Workroom, and Bookkeeper's Office. There are two portables on the school grounds. One is used by the School Psychologists and Special Ed. Consulting Teachers. The other is an office for the Guided Reading Coach assigned to our school.
